A week ago - concert

A concert with a twist

Last Saturday our choir had an absolutely unconventional concert - each song we sang, had its own twist. We started with one choir piece that every Estonian knows and instead of announced conductor one choir singer started to conduct it while the announced conductor was still bowing to the audience. Then they started to fight over who is the true conductor. The fight lasted until the end of the next song that was performed with a spit choir - a canon which was meant to be sung by two groups.

Then, we performed one really romantic and emotional song which by the way sound quite good with our performance, until the conductors cellular rang really loud. Well, he answered the phone, the choir was holding one note and when he finished his call, we continued singing.

During the next song we didn’t have a conductor at all (he was talking to his cellular) - when we started to sing, we descended from the stage and walked randomly in the hall among the audience. At the end of this song the women walked back to the stage and they performed their own song.

The next song - an arranged folk song - had translation subtitles. Girls had painted hugh texts on rolls of wallpaper and changed them in the right order so that the audience could understand it properly. Well, a line "Estonian guests want to come" was translated as "Tourists are coming"…

Now, the next song was a special one - I’ve always enjoyed singing this Brahms’ piece. However, after the middle of the song, the singers started to faint one-by-one… until there were only 6 singers standing (the song has 6 voices :) who got it to the end. Performing that was quite an experience.

OK, the next one was the only one with a piano accompanying the song. Everything went well, but it seemed that playing for this song wasn’t simply enough for the pianist - so, she started to play something absolutely out of the context and the hosts were now almost drop-dead stressed of another mishap. The crazy pianist could have stopped only by a medical interference - and that exactly happened.

There are some Estonian composers who simply write quite odd and funny music - the next song was by one of this kind and the song itself was already a twist. In the music the singers have to clap hands, stump, whisper and whistle.

And another arranged folk song - about making fun of a groom - we made so much fun that just before the end of the song, we couldn’t stop laughing… 50 people trying to laugh as loud as possible is already a good joke itself.

The program was quite a mixture of slower and faster, romantic and folk songs. As it’s still autumn, we performed also a autumn-song. It has quite a majestic ending. The only logical thing to do with that was to take out small flags and balloons and waive with them :D

And finally, the last song - it was about killing a Christmas-pig - we had two guys imitating attacking our conductor with knives. Don’t worry, in the end of the day, everyone was quite well.

But the concert didn’t end with that song - we had also an additional song and the audience was quite happy to hear that - it was a very nice song about love… accompanied by a powerpoint presentation :)

Well, that’s all folks - here are some pictures from that event. And I almost forgot - many thnx to Alts for the pictures.
